Janosik I.-II. (1962-63)

A story of the legendary folk hero, bandit Juro Janosik (1688 - 1713) on the background of life in Slovakia at the turn of 17th and 18th centuries. Director of movie was Palo Bielik - Slovak director, scriptwriter, actor, and founder of Slovak cinematography. "... Bielik's work, mainly its first epoch, is marked by an ambition to overcome his predecessors by a qualitative breakthrough. The first, silent version of the Siakel brothers was created with naive nationalist and social pathos, the second film by Mahen and Fric (with Palo Bielik in the lead role) presents this folk legend in an elevated, purely romantic tone, and the third one indicates aspirations of bringing the legend down to earth without abandoning traditional tools of historical narrative films, reducing the legend to a contemporarysocial drama," daily Praca wrote about movie in 1963.

Janosik (1921)

Janosik, the story about legendary folk hero, is the first Slovak full-lenght motion picture, shot by American immigrants of Slovak origin. "A remarkable feature of the film is that story is told in retrospective, in the memories of an old shepherd. The film makers combined the narration with humorous situations most probably inspired by American westerns. They applied a complete arsenal of tools available at that time, such a story telling, dramatic use od face and object close-ups, etc," magazin Film a divadlo wrote in 1971.
