They are unique phenomena even within the context of the Slovak folk art because of their genre individuality and particular characteristic art symptoms. During Christmas holidays "salase" (meaning sheepfolds with shepherd`s huts) paintings belonged to traditional decorations of miner`s homes - they were used as decorations of triangle-shaped board in the corner of the room, serving as a stand for wooden or paper figural model of the Nativity. They were placed even in mines, at places where miners gathered before going down in the pit or underground in blasted-out recesses and at mining machines.
